Celebrating International Book Giving Day: Empowering Literacy through the Gift of Books

This day holds a special place in our hearts as we cherish the power of literature and believe that one book for a child is a stepping stone to a pathway of an educated, fulfilled and empowered career and future.

International Book Giving Day is all about getting new, used, and borrowed books into the hands of as many children as possible.  It is about increasing children’s access to books and instilling a love of reading in them.

Being an entity that operates in Papua New Guinea, we’ve witnessed firsthand the stark reality faced by communities where access to books and literacy remains a significant challenge, if not non-existent. Yet, it’s within these challenges that opportunities for meaningful impact arise.

Our Partnership with Buk Bilong Pikinini:

Each year, we are privileged to partner with Buk Bilong Pikinini (BbP), an organisation dedicated to promoting literacy among Papua New Guinean children. In our Brisbane office, we undertake the mission of delivering upwards of 10,000 books (last year almost reaching 20,000) to Papua New Guinea, where BbP are building libraries to support literacy in the region. Its inspiring to partner with BbP a like-minded organisation recognising the power that each book has to ignite curiosity, foster learning and inspire dreams among children and young adults. This partnership is not a philanthropic endeavour to us. It is a value which has been woven into our culture since we initiated the partnership in 2018. As a business, it is our belief in the inherent right of everyone having the opportunity to unleash their greatness to inspire legacies for themselves, their families and their communities – and this is the mission which drives us as a company.

Each year we are proud to invite and involve our community of candidates, clients, consultants and contractors to help cultivate a culture of literacy. So, to recognise and raise awareness for International Book Giving day, we wanted to share our story of partnership with Buk Bilong Pikinini to our wider audience, to share the understanding that books are not just a nice to have, leisurely product, that many of us take for granted. In developing nations such as Papua New Guinea, they are a beacon of hope, a gateway to knowledge and a pathway to a meaningful career.

We will look forward to igniting our annual BbP collection mid-2024. However, if you are someone who has books needing donating or know of schools or others who have used books, let us know at admin@peopleconnexion.com!
