The TSS visa allows organisations to sponsor a skilled worker to come to Australia when there is a shortage of talent with the skills and experience needed for the roles.

Workers can be sponsored temporarily or permanently so long as the role is listed on the Skilled Occupations List.

There are two streams under the 482 Visa:

1. Short-term stream: which is able to be renewed one the incumbent is onshore
2. Medium-term stream: Which allows incumbents as eligible to apply for permanent residency after 3 years.

Under the TSS Visa, the following criteria must be met by organisations:

• occupation must be on the eligible occupation list. STSOL for Short-Term stream and MLTSSL for Medium-Term stream;
• meet the requirement for the minimum salary as per Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) as well as the market salary rate for the nominated occupation;
• meet the mandatory labour market testing; and
• meet the non-discriminatory workforce test.

1. Become a standard business sponsor (SBS)

You must meet certain criteria to become an SBS including being a properly registered and trading entity.  When you become a SBS, you sponsor someone to work for you on either a Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) or a Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494).

2. Visa Occupation nomination / engagement of Peopleconnexion

Where the local market has been unable to meet the demand for your position available, and when the position is included on the Skilled Occupation List (or other relevant lists), you can then nominate an overseas candidate to fill the position. This is where your organisation would engage Peopleconnexion, which would search and qualify candidates, and ensure Local Market Testing (LMT) has been satisfied, a requirement for sponsorship.

3. Candidate documentation

You would then interview the presented candidates and Peopleconnexion would then collect relevant documentation from applicants i.e., passports, police checks (and any other required documentation as part of the process).

4. Selection and nomination

You would nominate a candidate for sponsorship and PX guides the candidate through the visa application process and within an approximate 3 months, the incumbent would begin with you!

According to MAX Solution's Ready to Work report, out of the approximate 125,000 skilled migrants who have entered Australia:

• almost 50% have been unsuccessful in employment in their chosen field
• at least 51% of the skilled migrants have completed industry-relevant training since arriving
• 45% have between 5 to 20 years' experience in their chosen field.

In February 2022, The Australian Government introduced three incentives to maximise the contribution of Australia's onshore migrant workforce to fill skill shortages and address the strong demand for skilled labour.

1. Faster Migrant Skills Assessments - to fast-track skills assessments for onshore migrants in a priority occupation who have already submitted an application
2. Skills Assessment opportunities - fast-tracked skills assessment for onshore migrants who have never undergone a skills assessment and have qualifications relevant to priority occupations
3. Employability assessments - free employability assessments and access to subsidised training to gain the specific skills required in the market.

These incentives will assist around 9,500 onshore migrants improve their employment opportunities and similarly help Australian businesses and industries address workforce pressures.

The below two visas are the most commonly used, in addition to the TSS SC482, for migration recruitment.

• Employer Nominated Scheme Visa (Subclass 186) is a permanent visa where companies nominate to sponsor a highly-skilled worker to work and live in Australia. Under this scheme is three streams of Direct Entry Stream; Labour Agreement Stream; or Temporary Residence Transition Stream.
• Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme Visa (Subclass 187): is a permanent resident visa similar to the above, but it is relevant for skilled worker positions in regional areas.
