Nurturing your people’s success in Papua New Guinea

When it comes to on-hire, for us, your people are not just a workforce, they are your most valuable assets and consequently, ours too. This is what underpins the third step in our 5-step Blueprint to bringing your offshore operations to PNG.

What we know all to well is that the media and stories online of Papua New Guinea (PNG) don’t always fully tell the whole story of experiencing PNG. That is why we have meticulously developed comprehensive guides for expats moving to PNG and video interviews with past expats to properly prepare people for the transition not only to a developing nation, but to PNG specifically.

While contractors may not walk through our own physical doors, they are taken care of just as if they do, and are considered one of our own. Therefore, our focus is to nurture their professional journeys for long-term success – and this is what forms the basis of our scope of work, policies and procedures in contractor workforce management.

1. Cultural awareness and intelligence

The people of PNG take pride in their cultural diversity, treasure natural marvels, and adeptly navigate the complexities of modernisation while safeguarding rich heritage. The reciprocal exchange of culture and support cultivates a robust connection between expatriates and the local community can either enhance or risk the expatriate experience in PNG. This is one of the reasons which motivated our L&D teams to develop our Cultural Intelligence Consequently, this is a program we offer to all of our On-Hire clients, to ensure we prepare and equip diverse professionals from varying backgrounds with the awareness and intelligence to create meaningful and impactful relationships with locals and other expatriates in PNG to set the stage for effective business interactions and operations.

2. Wellbeing:

The other crucial aspect to nurturing people’s success, whether expatriate or local, is to prioritise wellbeing. This year, we ran a 6-week Wellness Webinar series, every fortnight to our Contactor Workforce which offered an immersive journey into diverse landscape of wellbeing. The focus of our program is to build lasting personal wellness habits. Rather than offering theoretical content, our modules guide participants with the practical tools and resources to develop flexible and sustainable wellness practices that can be integrated into anyone’s daily routine. You can find out more information about our webinar series by visiting the event page.

3. Mentoring:

Mentoring serves as a vital contribution to the skills development of nationals. This is in part reason why expats are required by PNG’s Immigration and Citizenship Authority as it becomes a catalyst for the development of culturally-astute professionals. Mentoring is close to our heats at Peopleconnexion, and is something we facilitate internally each year, rotating mentoring relationships to build knowledge-sharing and personal development in each individual. In collaboration with our L&D department, we have extended this as our Mentoring Matters program, specialised for the landscape of PNG with expatriate and local audiences. In the context PNG, where cultural intricacies and diverse landscapes shape the business environment, mentoring plays a pivotal role in expatriate success. The mentorship process enables expatriates to seamlessly integrate into the local culture, fostering collaboration, relationship building and effectiveness in business operations.

In the dynamic business landscape of PNG, success is not solely measured by operational efficiency; it’s measured by the growth and well-being of your people. Partnering with an agency that transcends traditional on-hire services to provide cultural awareness, mentoring, and wellness initiatives is the key to thriving in this vibrant nation.
