A confidential Head of Legal search that’s still holding four years on

Confidential General Counsel / Head of Legal Search, Papua New Guinea

The Challenge

Our client, a multinational FMCG business, needed to fill a senior General Counsel / Head of Legal role in Papua New Guinea for a PNG National, on a strictly confidential basis. Given the sensitivity of the position, the search required absolute discretion throughout — from initial scoping through to candidate engagement — alongside a clear understanding of PNG’s local legal and regulatory environment and the specific market salary benchmarks needed to attract the right calibre of candidate.

The client was looking for a proven senior legal professional with prior leadership experience in a large, ideally international, corporate environment, the ability to build strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, and a track record as a consistent, trustworthy, high-performing operator at the senior leadership level.

What We Did

We worked closely with the client’s HR and international legal leadership to understand the confidential nature of the role and the local market context, including providing salary benchmarking to guide an appropriate offer in a competitive market. We managed the search with discretion at every stage, ensuring candidate confidentiality was maintained while moving quickly to build a shortlist the client could begin interviewing within weeks.

The Result

We submitted a shortlist of five suitable candidates, all of whom progressed to interview stage. One candidate advanced through to second and third interviews, engaging with stakeholders across on-the-ground management as well as international leadership teams, and was successfully placed in the role — where they remain today, having been in the position for over four years.
