Why you?ll want to move to North Queensland in 2017

If you are fed up with the daily commute, the crowds and the same-old projects in major cities, could a change in pace and a career boost be on the cards for you? Google North Queensland and you will find thousands of photos of crystal clear water, picturesque beaches and tropical rainforests ? but here is what the tourism board won’t tell you:

Projects

Projects are starting to ramp up in North Queensland this year, driven by the governments? decisions to kickstart funding towards much-needed infrastructure investment and upgrades across the region. The area’s biggest projects will improve the area’s energy capabilities, roads, railways and infrastructure. But they are going to need the engineering expertise to pull it all off. Here’s a quick overview of some of the biggest projects on the radar:

  • $8.15b Aquis Resort, sports and recreation precinct, convention centre and casino development
  • $250m North QLD Stadium design and construction
  • $515m Haughton River Bridge project
  • Townsville Eastern Access Rail Corridor project (recently received commitment to fund business case)
  • Peak Downs Highway – including $189m for Eton Range crossing
  • $8.5b in improvements and upgrades to the Bruce Highway, including $565m for Mackay Ring Road
  • $13.5m contract for Kennedy Developmental Road from Hughenden to The Lynd
  • $189m widening of Eton Range crossing on Peak Downs Highway
  • Townsville Port expansion
  • $58m widening of Bruce Highway between Robert Road and Foster Road
  • $780m Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade

Housing Market

Source

If you?re looking to make a move to Townsville, now is the right time to snatch up a property. Due to a slowdown in resource sector investment in the region last year, vacancy rates have risen up to 6% which translates to a high availability of quality housing, cheaper house prices and rents. In Cairns, median house prices and rents are still on the rise after a strong 2016; welcome news for any investors looking to develop in high-growth suburbs Trinity Beach, Earlville and Bungalow. Despite the contrast in movement over the two housing markets, they share one thing in common: the median house and rent prices are still low enough to make anyone in Brisbane and Sydney jealous.

Lifestyle

Source

In general, life up north is a little more relaxed. The sun shines for more hours in a day, the cities aren’t as crowded, and nobody wears neckties. If you’ve ever met anyone that grew up in North Queensland, the first things they will mention are:

1.      The beach

2.      The rainforests

3.      Fishing/diving/sailing or a combination of all three

4.      The heat

With some of the world’s best beaches at their doorstep, there is no denying our northern neighbours are a lucky bunch. Can you imagine what you would do with your days off and weekends when world listed heritage sites aren’t a world away? If you are scouting out a move up north, here are a few activities to add to your bucket list:
