In this feature, we called on our Aussie expat readers to participate in in our expat survey, to help us paint a more specific and accurate picture of how our Aussie expats in the Pacific were affected by the pandemic and how they view the future. In this month\u2019s edition, we share our top four findings along with Fraser&#8217;s\u00a0insight into some of findings of the motivators and concerns of expatriate work.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Top concern for the future: Visas and paperwork<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u200b <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15539 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/concerns.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/concerns.png 1920w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/concerns-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/concerns-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/concerns-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/concerns-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since the pandemic began, Australia has been <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/joe.22088\">reported <\/a>as having some of the world\u2019s strictest border rules, even banning its own people from leaving and retuning; consequently, being dubbed as \u2018fortress Australia\u2019.\u00a0 This could assist in explaining why our expats reported Paperwork and Visas as their top concern, even over missing family and employment opportunities. However, just this week, the Federal Government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/skilled-migrants-international-students-and-refugees-welcomed-back-to-australia-from-1-december\/5b016788-4612-4a0d-8551-0000b0fa1950\">announced <\/a>eligible visa holders will be allowed to travel to Australia without applying for a government exemption from 1 December 2021, meaning that our Australians working and living abroad can now feel less concerned about being trapped from their homes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Top motivator: Ability to earn more<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15540 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/motivations-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/motivations-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/motivations-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/motivations-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/motivations-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/motivations.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fraser mentioned,<em>\u201cIt isn\u2019t just about the benefits which come with remuneration packages, but that more often than not, expats receive a higher premium for going to hardship countries such as PNG, so it was unsurprising to see that the key motivator for expat work is the ability to earn more, despite the concerns and challenges that come with it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNot only do expats have cultural differences and hardship to consider, but now going into a country with a low vaccination status&#8221;,\u00a0<\/em>he said.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"3\"><strong>Low concern for country vaccination status<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15541 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/vaccination.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/vaccination.png 1920w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/vaccination-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/vaccination-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/vaccination-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/peopleconnexion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/vaccination-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Conversation <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/just-1-7-of-people-in-png-are-vaccinated-against-covid-why-is-resistance-so-fierce-170876\">reported <\/a>PNG\u2019s vaccination status of just 1.7%, causing concern for fierce resistance spreading throughout the nation<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was interesting to see that a large percentage of our expats weren\u2019t concerned about this. If you happen to get sick in these types of countries the concern comes with the health care systems under pressure, and the likelihood of foreigners getting the care that is needed\u201d. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHowever, over half of our expats reported being in expat roles for more than 50% of their career and with 88% of our participants being fully vaccinated, I can see why a country\u2019s uptake may not be concerning enough to cause a shift in their career\u00a0trajectory\u201d, <\/em>Fraser said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of career opportunities, this rated high as a concern for the future of expat work.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"4\"><strong>High concern for future employment opportunities <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It is known that expat packages in Multi-National Corporations are the first costs to be cut when businesses face financial constraints and it was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2021\/11\/02\/do-expatriate-salary-packages-have-a-future-in-a-post-pandemic-world\/\">reported <\/a>if expatriate salary packages have a future in a post-pandemic world.<\/p>\n<p>Fraser mentioned,\u00a0<em>\u201cThere is no doubt that there will continue to be corrections and cuts. However, places like PNG are going to have huge investment and growth in the coming years.
